I hit 4 miles on the track without stopping at 6:12 average. I felt really good especially for the first 3 and a half miles. Is this a good sign? What kind of 5k shape do you think I am in?

Yes, it's a very good sign if your goal is to break 18:00. I would imagine that you are approaching that type of fitness right now. Maybe 17:30 if you lose weight, up your mileage, and start reading LetsRun everyday.
It's not a good sign if you are Galen Rupp. Needs to be about 1:45 / mile faster with the same level of effort.

I'm going to assume that "6:12 average" is per 400m lap on the track. This is 24:48 1600m pace. Not a bad clip. It puts you into that rare territory of a sub-1hr15min 5k if you really kick it in the final .1. Keep working at it and don't forget the sunscreen if you are going to keep doing long runs like this in the summer.

Way too little info to tell. What is your weekly mileage? How many miles did you run the day before? Did you wear spikes? Was weather a factor at all? What was your effort?
Thank you for a good response. Weather was warm but it was at night so I didn't feel the heat. Day before I think I did 8 miles. Weekly mileage has been anywhere from 45-55 for the past 3 weeks.
