Does anyone have any insight on the kind of training required to run a sub 3:50 1500m?
I have run 1:51 for the 800m in the past so have the speed, but what kind of sessions/mileage should I be doing to hit sub 3:50?
Thanks

Apart from the long run, these are the sorts of sessions you'll need to master:
- vVo2 max work - google Veronique Billat. Basically 2 or 3 mins at 2km pace and the same time at 60% recovery, say 5 x 3/3 or 7 x 2/2.
- also structured fartlek like 10-12 x 2/1, the Kenyan classic, hard at 5km speed and the 1 min rrecov at long run speed, or a Mona fartlek, or ladders
- 200s and 300s at 800 speed as you get closer to season (the day before the long run)
- hills, hills and hills
- tempos, or better yet a hard tempo followed by hills
- hard 5 min reps, with 3 min recov
- at the track 400s with a 200 float
- and heading into season the classic 8-10 x 400 at mile speed with 1 min recov
- easy runs on light days but at a decent speed
And get the balance right.
You can get it done with 30-40 miles a week. Had a handful of guys in our conference who were 1:52 800m runners just doing a lot of hard intervals and faster running. That said, it would be so much easier to break 3:50 if you were around 50-60 with your speed.
3:50 is roughly 4:07

Wrong...
3:50.00 to 3:50.99 1500m is equivalent to 4:08.40 to 4:09.47 mile.
Using the standard 1.08 conversion factor of course.
Well I've run 3:57 in a tactical race on about 25 mpw. How important is the mileage vs some key sessions?
RIP: D3 All-American Frank Csorba - who ran 13:56 in March - dead
RENATO can you talk about the preparation of Emile Cairess 2:06
Great interview with Steve Cram - says Jakob has no chance of WRs this year
