The original didn't rely on cheap scares like thrasher movies and music does w most horror movies. It is the viewers imagination that makes that movie terrifying. The psychological stuff the witch does to mess
W them like having them walk all day just to end up back where they started... That stuff. Just really creepy.
I also believe the original was meant only for a theatre experience. The surround sounds of nature made it even more scary.
I recall the ending pissed a lot of ppl off back I the day but I recall my teammates and I went to see it after practice when it was first released and I don't think any of us blinked the last 15 min of that movie. My heart was pounding and they could not have shown anything as scary as what I was imagining they were about to.
Fun facts, they actually filmed some alternate endings: one being all three were hanging down in the basement, one being Mike was on the trade mark Blair witch cross in the basement and one being Mike floating above ground and you see the witches feet pick up and shut the camera off after heather met her demise. But I like the ending as is. It leaves to the imagination. Scary scary movie... And original for its time. Not cheap scares like most crap today.
