I'm the second best runner on our XC team and it's my first time running XC in 4 years. I'm a mid distance guy in track who runs a 51 400 and 2:00 800. Gonna be a junior in HS. Our best runner isn't here this week, so I was the best guy out there for today's workout. It was a ladder going downward of 1600-1200-1000-800. So it was a "speed" workout right? Our coach wanted us running every single one in 6:00 PACE!!! Before the workout he said he wanted the "Varsity guys" (by the way only ONE of them besides me can run a mile in under 5 minutes) to run in a pack for the whole workout. I was stunned. How in the world is anybody going to get better if we're all trying to run as a team?! If you're faster then the rest of them, you shouldn't be training at the same speed. That's holding me back in my opinion from reaching my potential. I ran the first mile in like 5:25 and my coach was livid because I didn't stay with the team. I was trying not to talk back to him, but I was pissed. This is my first time doing distance training on a team in 4 years and I'm already better then 20+ guys who have been doing this for 3-4 years in High School. His coaching isn't intense enough and nobody wants to be competitive. I stayed in the front of the pack for the next 3 as well but it wasn't as big of a gap so the coach was less upset about it. After the 1000 we were walking back to the start line and one of the runners said pretty loudly "thanks for sticking with the team Noah". Trying not to be a dick to him I politely said "Sorry man it's just hard to have to tell myself mentally to slow down like that. I've never trained that way". You know what they said to me? They said "It's really easy to slow down. AND IT FEELS GOOD!" Everybody but me started laughing. Are you kidding me?! If you're telling yourself mentally to just run in your comfort zone and to keep it easy it's no wonder why none of these guys can run a mile in under 5 minutes. What do you guys think about all of this? I'm only doing XC to lower my 800 time to a 1:55 this year. But with this coaching method and with the overall mentality of the team, I feel like I'm going to be ostracized for running faster then all of them. Thanks.
