I loved that thread - learned a lot.
I had an interesting encounter with a student this past semester. She was doing her speech on PEDs (vs them) but in the course of our conversation she said she had been taking meladron (I think that's what it is - the stuff Sherapova got busted for). After telling me she is no longer taking it since it is now illegal - she tells me how it helped her breathing etc.
I'm standing there thinking she doesn't understand that she was on a PED...the only reason her coaches/doctors gave it to her and the other team members is because they know it works and none of them were taking it for medical reasons (that is none had a heart condition).
this is apparently how it starts
and how the athletes gets duped into it
and how some (maybe most) still don't connect the dots that they were in fact cheating/taking a PED.
clearly we need to better educate athletes.
1) all former athletes need to come forward and come clean
2) all current athletes need to be required to report what they are taking
3) all current athletes need to be informed before hand how their team doctors and coaches will at some point attempt them to take something
and tell them how to respond and whom they should report this to.
pretty much there is a lot of blame to go around regarding the current state of drugs in our sports. I could care less about the Olympic cheater games that are about to take place. the only way I will ever believe any of them are clean is if we totally change the leadership and testing.
but to even get there we need those 3 things listed about to happen.
-1st past cheaters must come clean and report everything they saw and did!
99% were never caught or suspected..but they hold the key to it all. they know how the system of cheating took place and who was directing it.
Zat really opened my eyes to some of this
thanks
good to hear from you again
