Boulder is expensive, marijuana is legal in all of Colorado, so they end up somewhere cheaper. Think about it if you're just an average guy who smokes, you're competing with all kinds of fit athletic people in Boulder and won't seem very cool.
Boulder sucks. It used to be awesome, and then it got discovered, and all these crazy hippie-yuppie freaks moved there. It's got it's own vibe much like Portland. The creators of Portlandia should actually do a spinoff on Boulder.
I think people move there and then leave because reality does not meet expectations. Boulder is beautiful, yes. There are a lot of physically active people, yes. But it is crazy expensive, there are too many active people (gyms are expensive, the trails are always packed, tons of neurotic fitness types, etc), and many of the people there have that "I'm the greatest person in the world because I live in Boulder" attitude. You get disenchanted pretty quickly. There are better places to live in Colorado and elsewhere.
Boulder went downhill about 12-15 years ago and really slid off the cliff in the past 5-8 years. It's unrecognizable to those who lived there when it was paradise, which was the 1990s.

With Google finishing its new office there in 2017, what will it be like in future?
