I know Lydiard advocated rest between intervals of equal distance so that if you ran 800m hard you jogged 800m before the next one. Most modern coaches seem to advocate rest between intervals of equal time so that if you ran 800m in 2:20 you jogged 2:20 before the next one (which by chance usually ends up being half the distance, 400m in this case). What I want to know is what are the pros and cons of each school of thought. Now, as I understand it the reason Lydiard suggested the same distance rest is so that the next hard effort could be run with good speed or something like that. That shorter rests would interfere with the ability to give a good effort on the following intervals. With shorter rests the idea seems to stay in oxygen debt as much as possible, by keeping your HR elevated. But, Lydiard also states not to run the hard efforts too fast. With his longer rest though shouldn't you run faster than you normally would with shorter rests? Lydiard states that you should finish feeling you could do no more nor would you want to...but the workout he would have you run seems to counteract that? Less I am mistaken?
