HS standout from Washington state. In 2013 I was reading an article about how he had battled through injury and adversity to win NXN his senior year in 15:00, a course record time. Also sub 9 in the 3200 as a SOPHOMORE.
I remember I was a big fan of his. Last I heard he had committed to Wisconsin, only found one race result on his tfrrs profile. Anyone know what happened?
He has been a part of the Great Wisconsin Collapse. All of their great runners save Morgan McDonald have been terrible in the past year. I think that Kai ran either unattached or else in an open race somewhere last fall and ran over 27 minutes for 8k.
I think it was the Wisconsin open race IIRC. Ran like 27:30s
Horrible hip issues, as far as I know. Something is really wrong with one of his hips and he can't string much together, unfortunately.

Only Wisconsin could take an NXN champ and turn him into a 27:30 8k XC runner...
Typical North Central runner, runs well in high school and amounts to nothing in college. Look for Tanner Anderson to be an exception, but everyone else not so much. The kids there run insane mileage. But the way they run for their demographic provides kids with opportunities that they wouldn't have if they ran decent mileage and their coaches saved them for college rather than having them be really good in high school and below average in college.
I see Kai isn't on Wisconsin's CC roster this yr. Did he transfer somewhere?

He still goes to Wisconsin, just doesn't run anymore.
Just saw this thread. Yes, Kai has never gotten injury free and is no longer running. He has done well in school though and is still at Wisconsin.
Our track record for kids who have run in college has been probably what would be expected from kids from a program that develops them well in high school. Most have improved in college and been top runners on their teams at times. Check out stats for Andy Kimple, Jeff Howard, Katie Knight, Casey Adams, Vince Hamilton. none have become college superstars, but none showed up with insane talent either. As for the rumors of insane mileage, we laugh every time we hear about it. We do put in a lot more work than the average program, but more in terms of consistent year around work in many different areas.
