WOW! One of the greatest American mid-d talents of the current generation is looking to sit out the olympic trials in his prime because he can't get the standard? Think Nike will pull some strings to get the big fella in???

Interesting to see Jmac pull out of the race as well. Injury or just acute vaginitis?
JMac not finishing is a big hit to him personally, but a US olympian with a 3:30 PB... in his prime... failing to hit the trials standard is rough. I was really rooting for both of them to get it because the US needs something big in the 1500 to be competitive there.

Here's a hint.
If in a decade a person only flukes onto one national team, that person is not one of America's greatest mid-d talents.

Are you forgetting 2008 2011 or 2012

Six years ago, Wheating had a magic summer. He set personal bests at 800, 1500 and the mile. His 1500 was a great race. It made him the fourth fastest American, ever. We all thought there was a lot more where that came from. Sadly, there wasn't. He's never run that fast again. The fall off was dramatic, too. His next fastest 1500 was 3:34:39 . That's very good time, but not a great time. It put him behind Torrence, Heath, Jager, Tegenkamp and Rupp.
It's hardly his fault that's he's been running hurt ever since. But at this point, it's hard to see the magic coming back. Lightening doesn't strike twice, especially after six years.
I hope I'm wrong, but...
Selfish and beer. What did that get you Andrew?
Pretty much this. Same story as German Fernandez.

Here's a hint, learn yourself some history before you try to be all cute on these boards.
he won't be missed. all that grab @$$ and monkeying around has gotten him nowhere.
Yea he's more interested in how much he can drink and what girls he can sleep with anyways. HE'S DONE! HE'S BEEN DONE!

Yes. I'll bet huge money he gets in. Huge.
Weldon was at the meet and likely still asleep but I'll give him a call as I want to know if it was even contemplated that Wheating might not get in.
1) USATF/Nike, well actually is it John Chaplin, historically does whatever the hell it wants on these type of matters. There may be scratches so maybe he ends up as #30 but I hope there aren't and they still let him in so I can make a point.
2) We've been arguing for years the idea of having just 30 in the 1500 is so stupid. You run a whole round and go from 30 to 24. That's bad for the fans. In reality, you should have at least 36 in the first round, maybe even 48.
So they'll probably come to their senses and make the field larger.
3) Doing the 'right' thing and letting more people enjoy the Trials when you have plenty of space here (simply because it's Wheating) won't help the people screwed over in year's past. In 2008 or 2012, there was a Cornell alum at the meet for the 10,000. They had a lot of scratches and yet they didnt fill the field to 24. So she never got to compete.
The ash heap of American "could-have-beens" is getting large. Sheesh. I'd almost forgotten about ol' GF. Smh.
Wheating runs for NIKE, he will make it into the meet.
I know this is a story bc he made the team before and he has a great PR but in 2016, in this olympics we do we care?

Centro, Manzano and Robby Andrews have been to FINALS and won MEDALS. Can we focus more on these guys then some guy who will get bounced in the first round.
I believe they are filling the field to 30 , correct, even if not having the Trials auto standard correct?
I count 21 at 3:38.00 or better
I think Wheating sits 7th outside of those
Am I getting this correct? They take autos first and then however many to fill field to 30? Or am I way off on this?
Why are people assuming he wants to get in?
Bacterial Vaginosis**** Stuff's a b*tch.

German Fernandez still looks like the GF of old, it's just clearly not there mentally.
On the other hand, Wheating looks different physically. In 2008, I along with most other fans, looked at him and thought 'wow, when he matures he's gonna be a beast.'
Unfortunately, he looks bigger, slower and less athletic than he did as a kid. Not sure if that is training, maturation or injuries, but something is different. He has always been a bit of a head case so that is still there too.
(It almost reminds me of Rudisha the year he came back from injury. He was bigger, less sculpted and less gangly. Looks to be back to his former self now, though).

Are you counting last year? He's much lower than that. We have him at #34.
