Why? They were really good runners sub 15 5k's, sub 4:20 miles,Sub 9 3200.
So wouldn't you expect them to run in college and eventually maybe go pro? But nahh they want to do triathletes.

Because they enjoy swimming and biking. Sometimes it not about desperately chasing a scholarship. Why is this even a question?
"But nahh they want to do triathletes."
I think you answered your own question. Triathletes are hot, and that's who they want to do.
ya but come on these talented pansies are made for running

Define "go pro." Because in T&F it means you are earning 10's of thousands of dollars annually if you are lucky, nobody knows or cares besides 10's of people, and your best shot as a clean athlete is pack fill because the federation is okay with doping.
So, yeah, triathlon looks pretty good.
I ran track in college, graduated 12 years ago, and picked up triathlons about 3 years ago after tiring of running training. Middle distance runners are well suited for triathlons with the combination of power and endurance. So success is one reason. The variety of training with biking and swimming is awesome. You have a much bettee overall fitness. Also, what's wrong with excelling in more than one sport. Unless you're a us champion why have a meager life if that's not what you want. My guess is more of these guys would have done triathlons in hs and not been dedicated runners if exposed to it.

Because being really good isn't enough. In 2015, 34 guys ran 4:10 1600s. ~150 ran between 4:10 and 4:15. Odds are 2 or 3 of them go pro. It isn't realistic.
Obviously the odds of going pro is triathalon aren't much better but there is a chance it lines up with your skill set better (i.e. you are a 4:15 miler who can swim). And you might find the training more enjoyable (i.e. you don't worry about injuried anywhere near as much)
Triathlons are very fun to train for
