No, you should have doubled down by yelling "gobble gobble" as you crossed the finish line.

You did his kids a service by showing them they lost the genetic lottery.

That's the spirit. His children would have started hating their opponents at an early age and could eventually become great runners.
The true spirit of competition means we give our all. In doing so, we respect ourselves and our competitors. You did the right thing. Don't regret it.
Maybe the dad let you win.
Are you serious, or was this posted as a joke?
Any runner with some type of competitive streak would have done exactly what you did and beaten the man.
So a skinny basement dwelling guy running 80 mpw had to dig deep to beat a 50 yo hard working father of 5?
You should have told the kid you were racing for pink slips for your wives and to say goodbye to Mommy.
I'm sure many people have seen something similar to this:
A few years ago, I was hanging out near the finish line at a 5K in Providence, RI area, and around the 23 minute mark this big football-player-type built guy in his mid-20's with tattoos all over, all of a sudden starts sprinting for the line and literally elbowed and knocked a little girl off-balance who was an amputee running with one-arm! Everyone gasped, as he also sort of crashed into the runners who just finished ahead of him on the other side of the finish line. One of the guys working the line went right up to him, turned him around to see the girl he hit, and said something to him (I was out of earshot) - whatever he said worked because Mr Football then went up to her, said something and gave her a high-five.
So - in response to the OP - I would not hesitate to race anyone all the way to the finish (especially in a track race where people are probably somewhat serious runners). However, just be careful at crowded road races especially when you happen to be finishing alongside little children, old ladies, etc...
Good he didn't try to give the amputee girl a high-ten.
Stop sounding like an adult! This is LRC.
As a dad who occasionally races, you better not let up to let me win. I know I won't let up to let you win.

Ooh. Interesting thought.
I once let a woman beat me at the end of a road race because I didn't want to look bad putting in a hard kick to edge her out.
So I backed off and didn't want to be in her winning photo, either ahead of her or behind her.
She was one of those Russian chicks that came to town to win everything.
What do you gain by winning a low-key all-comers meet? Just let the dad win.
Pointless thread. If you were any good or did anything noteworthy you wouldn't need to start this thread. Someone would have already started one about you.
You did the right thing (you should never regret out-kicking someone). Hopefully the kids learned something about racing tactics so that when they are running they won't make the same mistakes of their father and start their kick too early.
