Wins NCAAs pretty convincingly and should put pressure on the Huling / Cabral / Bayer types to earn their spot on the Olympic team. Though obviously not the talent level of Jager, he looks like a natural steepler to me.

I watched his interview and he thinks he could run 8:15 in the right race which I wouldn't doubt. If he didn't tie up and close his last lap in a 69 (every other lap was 66-65) he would have ran low 8:20's. I'm hoping he makes the Olympic team, he looks a lot stronger than last year.
Great win at NCAAs, but I don't see him putting any sort of pressure on Huling or Cabral - they have both run well under 8:20 and are very consistent at USAs. I see him potentially getting 4th though, as Bayer and Leslie lack consistency. Even on solid day for those two Ferlic could take them down with a PR effort.
I think the guy has a tremendous amount of potential. But not this year. He was dead tired running that 8:25 and had nothing on the last lap. That won't work this time around.
But he'll get better. He is a super efficient hurdler. One of the best I've seen. He wastes nothing on the barriers.
His frame instantly reminded me of a younger Asbel Kiprop. Long and Gangly.

Does anyone have a video of the race? That would be awesome!
I can't find the full video but the short one is on flotrack.
After his fall last year I am really happy that he won, plus it was such a great race, showing why he was the best. I'm still amazed at how smooth he looks going over the hurdles, definitely the next best steepler for the U.S.
What video were you guys watching? Mason is awful at hurdling! He isn't strong enough for Bowerman; love to see him with OTC or Furman Elite and a coach who really focuses on the steeple.
He will join Coogan (New Balance). Have heard they want a guy for sure.
It's weird to watch a white guy run away from Kenyans like that. Aren't there like 40 or 50 sub-8:30 Kenyans who want to run in the U.S.?
there are 3 distinct tiers in American mens steeple right now (in no order within the tiers).
Jager
Huling
cabral
leslie
kebenei
bayer
etc
I think Ferlic is in that 3rd group, but there is a sizable chasm between that group and huling/cabral. If anyone is going to break in, I would bet on leslie and kebenei before ferlic and bayer.
I don't know anything about steeple, but Ferlic is really cute.

The race video. His technique compared to most was excellent. It didn't look great in the early slow laps or at the end when he rigged, but it was fantastic the rest of the race.
You have to be an idiot to say he's horrible at steeple hurdling, which you are.

The early laps, and the end, he led with his left leg, which he stiff legs it. Not good. When he leads with his right leg he's great.
Word to Mr Ferlic: lead with your knee (bent) not with your toes and leg locked straight. This is especially problematic for tall runners. When you stick your leg out straight like that it diminishes the available clearance window of your trajectory. Mentally pull your knee up first then extend as you clear the barrier. If you do that you'll give yourself at least 18 inches more wiggle room at your takeoff. If Sullivan can't coach it talk to Ronnie.
Gutsy run, by the way.
I think we are in agreement. He just didn't look comfortable hurdling when the pace was slow, and he was completely wasted at the end and his form fell apart, but when he was churning out Laos at sub 8:20 pace, his hurdle form looked good (not perfect but much better than a lot of 8:20/8:30 guys.
Using one of the best technicians in the steeple does not counter malmo's argument. Frerichs does just what Malmo recommends with both legs(right is a little better). This is how she ran 19 sec slower than Simpson for the 1500 but beats her record. Malmo is correct in that he needs to improve his left leg.

I don't know what that is supposed to show?
Regardless, women's steeplechasers are notoriously poor at hurdling, probably because the hurdles are so ridiculously low it is more forgiving.

I agree that Frerichs is awesome, but he doesn't, suggesting she is "poor at hurdling," simply because his argument is ridiculous.

When did I say Frerich is poor at hurdling?
