were alan webb's parents athletes? He's the most talented HS Boy ever in TnF, you'd imagine his parents were at least somewhat notably athletic.

If they weren't then they definitely could have been, talent doesn't come from nowhere.
Webb's dad still hits the pool for workouts. It's well known Webb was a youth swimmer. I was looking through a Reston Swim Team Association booklet recently and noticed Webb still had part of an RSTA AG record, the 200m FS medley. His brother was on the team too.
I was part of the youth track program in Reston where Alan got his start. Andrew Hunter's father, Marc, was our coach. (By the way Marc is a stand up amazing guy and was a great runner in his day.) But the funny thing about Alan is that he was not a stand out amazing athlete in those early days. He was good but I don't recall anyone thinking he was going to be a sub four miler. By the time he was 14 everything had changed and he was clearly a stud.

Do you remember anything else from your days in track with him? Many posters here would love to hear your recollections.
Premature male pattern baldness is a sign he was like a early to mid 20s guy while still in high school. So he may have been elite but he peaked early
Most talented High School TnF athlete of all!?!? Do you you realize that most great distance runners can't walk and chew bubble gum at the same time? I would take Michael Carter, Carl Lewis, Dan OBrien, Leshawn Merritt and Marquis Goodwin over Webb just to name a few off the top of my head.

What the hell is that meant to mean?

That distance runners are not athletic. If the standard is being fit and in great shape, they definitely are. If the standard is the team-sport norm of coordination, stamina and explosiveness, then on, no they are not. But neither are bodybuilders.
True, health related fitness components and sports/skill fitness components are very different. But just because an individual decides he doesn't want to play football, basketball, or soccer we shouldn't imply that he might not have athletic ability. Distance runners are often the most uncoordinated youth but a few elite runners played team sports in HS. Webb may or may not have been an outlier.
Webb won the genetic lottery. Move along.
There are dozens of former elite couples in and around Boulder, CO with kids, you haven't heard of any of the kids. (regression to the mean)

Sure it does. Random genetic mutation happens all the time.
Willy- Are you elite or were you?
Speaking of great High school and Junior talent:

No - just a moderately fast schmuck, but I could win my age division in Boulder during the Olympics. ;-)*Tangentially related: A decade or two ago, a $100 cash prize in Boulder could turn up more Olympic finalists than a Diamond League meet.

The Schumacher kids are a good example. They run for Jesuit HS in Portland. They're quite fast, but not pushing the envelope.
Do you have a few examples?

Uh Gerry the jogger and Jim Ryan would disagree with you and would be right.
Obea Moore and Jim Ryun were both better. Beyond that you have an argument.
