I coach hs pole vault. One of the other schools in our league had a girl who seemed very lost and confused and had trouble fitting in, was visibly uncomfortable with herself. She was also a moderately decent vaulter, jumping 10-6 as a sophomore.
That summer she attempted to commit suicide. After a long stay in the hospital, she had the courage to tell her family she felt inside to be a he. He transferred to a school in another league to make a fresh start as a boy. He continues to vault similar heights, so went from being top 3 or 4 in the league to not making the league meet. He seems much happier though.
Obviously I'm not going to post the kids name/school, but my point is that you're wrong: it does happen in both directions. You just don't hear about it, because no news reporter wants to report on somebody who is competing well below average. Just above average despite difficult circumstances in life is just right for the modern news cycle.
