The point of the saying you mention is really more about those who already have succeeded, whether in sports, academics, life, or whatever. It's more about grit and endurance than talent or luck. But obviously not everything you determine to do can be done. There are limits to what can be done. So I think the more realistic saying is "if you work hard, you create better odds for yourself."
