Middle aged men doping... Colorado issue or everywhere?

**Typo** I meant to say - "60 days leading into his race" - The dude said whatever he was prescribed to take he took double that amount per day to get his T levels way higher.

Sadly I think this is all too common bud.. I know a friend personally who has done this exact method to dope.

I often have thought to myself that the winners in my local races probably dope as well. Lol. The thing is, i doubt local races will drug test non-elites though.

If they did, then failing means they would have to fail an IQ test.

There's a guy in our city who has USATF age group records on the track who was dirty as heck when he set them. Of course his primary physician happens to be the local anti aging doc as well. Perhaps the worst part of it is having to watch him tell everyone who will listen, about his records.

If there's one thing more pathetic than youngsters doping and boasting on these boards, it's masters posting how great they are for their age. Dudes, it's not inspiring, and everyone assumes you dope. I'm all for running as long as you can (I'm closing in on 50 years from my first race) but frankly the competitive obsession of certain, say, over 45's, is creepy.

This is the first time that I recall hearing about anything like this in Colorado Springs. I don't believe that any of the fastest masters I've known in CS -- all much faster than the guys you've mentioned -- would have done this kind of thing, but the world has changed. I would expect it to be much more commonplace in areas where "anti-aging" is big business and regulation is lax. (Scottsdale is perhaps the first place that comes to mind, but there are others.) But I don't know. "Anti-aging" enthusiasts are generally not trying to develop the kinds of bodies that propel 40-year-olds to fast marathon times; they're more likely to be trying to develop bodies that attract (or keep) sexual partners. So perhaps that's a very different market.

In any event, I'm not optimistic about any efforts to control this kind of behavior among older athletes; ultimately, I'm not even sure that it's wise policy, and my sense is that even anti-doping agencies may be moving in that direction.

Is this a little like Kara's use of thyroid mediation justification?

I don't think this is prevalent as you think. Many runners middle aged got fast by doing workouts, miles, and hard training. Saying anyone that beats you is on something is frankly insulting. People have breakthroughs too and can run faster if they put in the work.

You don't need to dope to run a 1:20 half or even a 2:34 marathon at age 40. Those times are better than average but pretty commonplace for 40 years olds. Maybe you can get suspicious if they're doing that at age 50 or 60.

Have you ever looked at the Androgel website? One of their questions used to be - and probably still is - about declining athletic ability.

Agree 100% on this. I wouldn't even question a 40 year old running 1:20 or 2:34, it's pretty much par for the course for a better than average 40 year old runner who is well-trained. 1:20 at 50 isn't even much of an outlier.

You're missing the point. OP is not accusing these guys without evidence -- they told him that they dope. Moreover, while there maybe plenty of guys who can run 1:20 at that age, there are also plenty who cannot and wish they could. Anti-aging AKA performance-enhancing drugs are becoming like the new Centrum silver.

u guys r missing the point- he didn't say the times were super suspicious, no, he said he KNOWS the guys were talking about using "T." They happen to run those times. But according to OP they are admitting to doping. That's not open to conjecture (according to him)

(BTW, one doesn't need to even take a test to get a T prescription. Just say you have symptoms, and if you got the right doc, whammo, you're taking testosterone. It's that simple)

(oh, and just because you're not world class, doesn't mean you're not cheating. A hobby jogger on steroids ain't gonna break the WR. But he'll get better!)

Fred listed his 800m PR set when he was in high school. In college they would let him run track--way too slow.
