Would Centro have beaten Asbel Kiprop at the Pre-Classic?
Would Centro have beaten Asbel Kiprop at the Pre-Classic?
Is that meant to be a joke?
No, not a joke. Centro is the truth.
Kiprop's stride is about twice the length of Centro's. Centro has a decent kick but it's a joke compared to what Kiprop can throw down on the final stretch.

I don't think so, no.
No. wrote:

I agree that Kiprop is better than Centro, but what does his stride length have to do with anything???
Had Centro been in the race, I highly doubt his kick would have been as sharp as it was at World Indoors, simply because of where he would have been in his training cycle. Kiprop almost without a doubt would still be your champion, but that doesn't mean Centro couldn't have put on a good show like he did last year. Given the slow opening and the fast finish, top 5 strikes me as a reasonable guess.
Kiprop looks unbeatable right now. He made 3:51 look way too easy.

No, it is hard to get in good workouts with a stress reaction and so Centro would not be sharp. Plus the race itself would be very painful.
On second thought, nothing. I was just reaching for a way to put down Centro.

Not only did he make it look easy, he was toying with the field. When h knew a fast time was out of the window, he dropped back into the pack and gave them a few strides, just to see if he could still beat them. He did the same move last year. Hand him the gold.
Agreed. He looked like he was toying with the competition on the back straight away and then ripped them apart on the final stretch.
Comparing Centro to Kiprop is laughable at this stage in the game.
That's like asking if any of the jv hobby heroes here can beat Kiprop. Laughable.
"If" Centro had raced and say they were tied with 150m to go, here is how it would of gone down:
Kiprop swings wide, in 2 1/2 strides has 10m on centro, with 100m to go Kiprop breaks wind and breaks stride, 8m on Centro. Kiprop regains his composure. At 75m kicks for real, fart smell dissipates to Centros relief. At 25m Kiprop slows down, waves to crowd and crosses finish line 20m ahead of Centro.
Right now NOBODY current or past can or could beat Asbel if he's on his A game in the mile/1500.

No.
Centro is THE MAN.
The only thing Centro will beat anyone to is the ice cream and candy station.
since all the rest of the NOP runners entered in Pre ran like garbage it is safe to assume Centro would have too. So you answer your question
No chance in hell that Centro beats Kiprop

I don't know about that!
I think a lot of the views describing Kiprop as invincible at the moment, is based more on the supposed training sessions coming out of his camp. While I don't doubt that these are true, sometimes an athlete can leave his best performances on the training track.
Another observation is that people are measuring 'how easy' Kiprop is running based on how he looks at the end of a race. This can also be misleading.
So far, statistically speaking, Kiprop's 2 performances in DL races haven't been as impressive as previous years. I think he finished in something like 56 and 28 in Doha in a 3:32, and 54, 26 high in a 3:51 mile at Pre.
These aren't earth shattering closing splits in these type of races, and certainly have been bettered by many athletes in the past.
Steve Cram, who knows a bit about running easy 3:32's even raised the question at Pre, when he said he was baffled by Kiprop's lacklustre last lap in Doha, when he was on for a 3:30 time. He proposed that maybe Asbel wasn't feeling quite as comfortable as his outward expression made out.
Don't get me wrong, he looks great for May and I think he is still the overwhelming favourite for Rio, but I do think it is far too early to be sure, and I think there have been plenty from the past who could still beat Kiprop in his current form.
