Anyone aware of any studies relating to the effects of Underwater Rock Running on a distance runner? For those who don't know, have a look at this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hA3rM1X-fds

Don't know any studies, but I'd say this workout is generally unnecessary for a serious distance runner. Distance runners get their aerobic capacity and lung capacity from long base runs over the summer. We don't need to hold our breath while running, we just need to increase the efficiency of our breaths.
But it would strengthen your lungs, therefore increasing lung capacity...
Heading out the door right now for a run in my concrete shoes.

I tend to agree. Unless you're already completely maxed out with regular running training (doing 100+ miles per week at a solid clip), things like these aren't going to help as much as just running. But I can see Galen Rupp trying something like this to get that .05% extra edge over other Olympians.
I believe that there are several studies which show that lung capacity does not correlate to oxygen uptake, and thus does not directly relate to running performance in any measurable way.
