I ran my one and only marathon in 2004 and ran 6 minutes slower than I expected based on my half marathon time(2:33). Shortly after, I walked away from running and haven't run more than a few miles over the last 12 years. I recently decided that I wanted to get back into it because my daughters are starting to run and I would love to help coach them. I haven't been lying around getting fat, but did get into weight lifting and I am 45 lbs heavier than I was in 2004. I know I will never be as fast as I was, but will I ever be able to be competitive in local road races again (say 16-17 minute 5k)? Anyone here ever take that much time off?
