yes, he's the next AR holder for sure. possibly WR
Guerrouj ran 3:33 at 19. Kiprop 3:31.
Let's see what Hunter does.
Drew looks overtrained. I'd wager he might drop his mile PR by 1 second during his entire career. Might be a decent marathoner after college, but that's it.
there was a DI coach on here a few months ago after FootLocker saying Hunter's form was limiting, like he had a ceiling. He is not fluid. I am starting to believe him. 1:48/3:58 tapped out. I am thinking he's gotta move up to 5000m.
Doubt Hunter will primarily be a Miler in college. More likely 5K guy. Webb ran 3:53 because, yes he was more mature, he was more of a true miler than Hunter, and the stars aligned on that day.
Hunter looks to be a bit of a shuffler. Does not have much upside in the mile. Marathon hopeful for sure.
Webb improved 7 seconds from his high school mile best. Damn impressive when his high school best was 3:53.
Hunter won't improve more than 2 or 3 seconds with that form.
he's not light on his feet and he has a hitch in his stride. that's what happens when you've been overtrained for most of your life. he's been running thousands and thousands of miles that way, there's no fixing his form now.
no fast twitch fibers - 1:48 is probably as fast as he'll be and i'm shocked he's even run that fast.

He's been training for less than 3 full years at any significant amount, and didn't go above 65 miles a week until last summer. He's worked on his form, but I agree that it needs a lot of work.
If he really has no fast twitch fibers and ran 1:48, then he really needs to get into a 5k.

Webb still dropped 7 seconds after being so "mature". And 3:53 to 3:46 are the toughest 7 secs in American history.
Nice try, though. Maybe Webb was just phenomenal in & after HS.
Baldies run fast

Honestly I'm not overly worried about drew. He wasn't spectacular. And I don't expect him to do much his freshmen year.
But he'll come around in college and be good. But I wish the ducks had the other high school sub 4 miler. He looked like a much better threat.
It's gonna take time to develop drew

I sure hope Oregon, for years to come, can find more loser shufflers with no future like Drew Hunter. Y'know, he's a loser who, on maybe the worst big-stage run of his life, after flying across the country, still ran one of the fastest high school miles EVER (that time alone having been bested by only Jim Ryun and Alan Webb -- EVER)! A loser who has a stunning 800 time (3rd best in 2016, something like 29th best EVER), despite not having the speed to fill Alan Webb's shoes in that event. A loser whose parents must feel so much shame for not passing onto him even one of those all-so-important fast-twitch fibers that Professor Nonsense lectured about.
Oh, Perfessor, please do tell us how many "thousands and thousands" of miles that young loser has run during those many, many years of overtraining -- you know, covering, as you say, most of his life (what, since he was in diapers?). [Mr. Hunter to baby Drew: "No Barney until you've put in a long tempo run!" Mrs. Hunter to baby Drew: "No Juicy Juice until you give me 4 x 800m in an average of 2:15!"] Your degrees are certainly not in math or science...more like literature...fantasy writing.

He's currently a 2-miler. And that's what he wanted to run, but they wouldn't set up a 2-mile race at Pre.
Webb was a 47 second runner in high school. Ofcourse he is going to look better when running at 56 - 60 second pace.
Also his easy runs where more traditional miler like at 6:00 average (source kids running interview)
Webb was a diferent type miler as well. Drew might do well if he ups his mileage to 100 over the years and be american record holder in the 5.
He is one of the contenders.
Don't forget about solinsky and Matt Tegenkamp. I am referring to 6 may 2006. They did great things in the coming months years.
Webb was faster earlier because he was going bald

High school senior Alan Webb was definitely more muscular than Hunter currently is. Not sure that means he was more physically mature.
Neither one is a graceful glider like many world class milers are.
In fact, Hunter's style is so relatively rough that I am doubtful he will reach the top of American miling.
But who knows? F Cacho had a read rough style and was always looking all over the place...but he had a decent career.
What's crazy is that Hunter looked beat up finishing that Bowerman Mile, like complete rigamortis. He looks 40.
Alan Webb was POWERFUL. Hunter is going to be interesting in college, but he is reminding me of Bernie Montoya - completely mechanical and rough.
