I'm thinking sub 6 for sure but how far under?

Sly was running 2:15 800s in those days. Who knows though because he was training for looks not performance.
Dunno. But he put up a pretty impressive 30-miler that one time:

3:41.56 (full mile). Didn't you see him beat the hell out of that stupid Russian Ivan?!?! Dude was a BEAST.
Basing this guess on his homoerotic run against/with Apollo on the beach in Rocky 3, but I'd say 5:23. He has decent leg turnover, and good closing speed, but I think those middle laps would grind at him.

You don't think he was too big, upper body wise to lay down a fast time?
Rocky was doing cross-fit before it was cool.
Stallone threw discus in high school on track team for 2 years.
Short, stocky dudes rarely run that fast for a mile.
I saw an interview with Stallone once and this topic did come up. Stallone stated that he was 'pretty fast' when he was training for the Rocky films. He said he could bread 10 minutes for the mile. He emphasized the fact that it was a 'real' mile and not a 'metric' mile (kilometer). The interviewer was very impressed with his 'speed'. Stallone graciously accepted the praise/adulation but stated that he didn't think he was in the kind of shape anymore.
I think he could steeple pretty well based on how he hurdled those benches.
I think you guys are being generous but I do believe that if he kept his chin up he could have broken into the 6 minute range. Remember, even the hobbyjoggers were faster back then, relatively speaking.
Get the man some real running shoes and proper attire and maybe he could push 5.
If he put in a little mileage : 5:15
My guess is 6:30. It doesn't take a fast mile to defeat Ivan Drago on all the roids...it takes an iron will. #imustbreakyou
6:30?!?!?
You Will Lose (that prediction).

Yes, but the grind only serves to fuel his fire. He needs to feel the sting before he gets serious.
Decathlete get close to 5 equivalent with much lower mileage than rocky.
I'd put the over/under at 5:05
How would he do against Usain bolt is the real question.
I think it all depends really on what he was training for. Here's how I think his career would play out:
Rocky 1 - 5:50 - running on 100% heart, youth is on his side
Rocky 2 - 5:40 - in chicken chasin' shape, goes 15 rounds, so he has some stamina
Rocky 3 - 6:15 does some intervals with Apollo, but they're too late to get him back under 6 mpm
Rocky 4 - 5:30, you can't defeat Mother Russia with anything other than a PR.
Rocky 5 - 7:00 - brain damage has ruined his motor skills, outside stress effects his recovery rates.
Rocky Balboa - 10:00, on a good day. Still has the heart, but his legs are gone.
Creed/Creed2 - Rocky is a hobby jogger
rocky does the Phil museum art steps:
72 steps approx 70 meters in 9.5 seconds (not counting his sprint to the steps where he is clearly moving faster - from run with kids on video) that about 54 second 400
or 7.36842105 meters per second
1609.344 meters per mile
so 218.41 seconds to do a mile means 3:38.41 mile ... UPHILL!!!!
would he maintain that pace for a mile? no
for the mcmillan calculator lets use 400 meters and say that Stallone could do
20% slower than 54 so that has him at 65.14 second 400m
Mcmillan puts him at 5:17 mile
attack away
but remember this: Sly did it in Converse high tops, he is the man

I confirmed these calculations with a TI-83, so it must be correct.
The question has been answered.
