I have about three weeks to decide on two job offers, one in Colorado Springs and the other in Portland, OR. Colorado Springs is 1000 miles away while Portland is 2300 miles from where I currently live. I currently live in an 860 sq ft apartment and am planning to sell mostly everything except for my king-size bed and possibly my couch.
1. What's the one thing you wish you knew before making a long-distance move?
2. Is it worth the extra $800+ to hire a company to drive my belongings there? If we do that, my girlfriend and I would take her car and spend a week or so driving through national parks along the way. Do you have any tips on negotiating a lower price from a rental truck company? Here were the quick quotes I got online (rental + towing my car + estimated gas):
-- Budget -- $1,793
-- Penske -- $1,759
-- UHaul -- $1,831
-- UPack (they drive) -- $2,688 (all things included)
-- PODS -- $3,113
3. There's nothing I hate more than sitting in traffic commuting to/from work. Is it realistic to find an 800ish sq ft, 1BD/1BA apartment for about $1,000 within 15 minutes from where I'll be working?
-- Colorado Springs (80903)
-- Portland (97204)
4. What's the best way to move your belongings across the country? I bought a bunch of those air-tight bags for my clothes to vacuum the air out and take up less space. I'm going to sell or donate as much stuff as possible over the next couple weeks to try to get rid of unnecessary stuff, too.
5. I've only visited these cities for a few days but thought they were awesome. I'm sure there's a bunch of stuff I overlooked when visiting, but what are some of the pros/cons of each city that people don't always realize?
Thanks and if you have any more tips about moving cross-country I would really appreciate it.
