As a society, we need more discussion regarding 7th & 8th graders participating as varsity athletes. It is not a settled issue. Only roughly 18 states in the US allow 7th & 8th graders to participate as varsity athletes. I understand why coaches like the option. Middle schools are basically farm teams which to be harvested in those roughy 18 states. As a society, we went the other direction in gymnastics. Since 1981, the minimum age for gymnast was moved from 14 to 16 for Olympic competition. We are usually referring to female athletes for obvious reasons. I competed as an athlete from what was then referred to as junior high school through college. The work load obviously increases. I am sure the 7th & 8th graders are suffering greater injury along with their varsity status.
