Has you ever tried to train anyone using the Igoli Methods? How did it work for you or the runners you coached?

Igoli training is for hipsters, trying to be cool by doing something vintage. Yes, it worked in the past, just like the Singer sewing machine a hipster has right next to their record player. But knowledge has moved on, and more thorough methods are available.
Everyone else should look up the name Mihaly Igoli/Bob Schul on the internet and find out how they trained. Schul is the only American to ever win the 5000 meter run in the Olympic Games. It's possible that he knows something!
You will find that other Olympians also believe that this method is still the best one out there because it combines the best of all worlds. I do not agree, however that it is the best way to train. I am open to trying it though because unlike some people on here I know that I am fallible and may be wrong.
In addition Paul Geis, former Olympian and 13:23 5000 meter runner, believes in the method because his high school coach espoused it.
Hungary broke over 40 world records during the ten years or so that Mihaly Igoli was the coach there. Then the Hungarian Civil War took place and Igoli and most of his runners had to leave the country. That stopped the theory from being what it was at the time.
With a knowledgeable coach it could work today.
They did have an article on it in Runner's World a couple of years ago.
I'm surprised the interval nuts have not taken to it.
I trained under Joe Douglas at the Santa Monica Track Club. He is a Igloi disciple. Here is a training article he wrote: http://www.usatf.org/groups/coaches/library/2008/Endurance/Training%20400m%20&%20800m%20Runners.pdf
IGLOI--the name is IGLOI.
Or, if you want to get technical: Mihály Iglói.
Come on, gang. This (like Van Cortlandt Park) is one of the names that people in our sport should get right.
I never heart of this man, Igoli.
Was he good trainer, laso for olng distance?
Did he ever train loympian champion?
olser [running fan since 2,7 weeks]
I have tried Igloi training as I understand it. It's basically very structured fartlek.
You are right on the correct spelling of his name. (Yes, and also cannot bench press 500 pounds.)
The question was whether you had tried the method on yourself or any athletes you have coached. Answer the question!
Craig Virgin is very high on Joe Douglas. Thank you for the reference.
Go to the head of the class.
Schul used walking breaks most of the time in getting ready for the 1964 Olympics. He also used walking breaks at Wright State Univ. when he coached there. Short walking breaks.

Joe Douglas is an excellent coach. He is the coach that Coach Igloi specifically trained. Like all Igloi followers he has modified Igloi's training some.
The only time I walked while with Igloi was when doing 100 repeats and to get a new set.
Coach Igloi watched every step his runners took. The Igloi System is Coach Igloi and changed set by set as they were run.
To get much more information read the 17 page Mihaly Igloi thread started by dc449 on June 5, 2004. There is a post by Bob Schul on page 2.
O.Atkins:
I will try to find what you referred to.
Thank you.
As Atkins stated, Igloi watched every step his runners took. They didn't just run intervals the way modern runners think of intervals or reps. They werent concerned with hitting splits even if they would have to strain. They ran relaxed, smooth, economically, and pushed when the coach felt they should.
Search this site for Orville Atkins posts. There is a tremendous amount of insight available. The posts were from around 2006 era i think.
2004 era to be accurate.

Are you update?
Schul-Igloi training is too hard. The athlete will build up too much pH and get sick/stale/or injured. Only an expert in the method could coach someone in it.
RIP: D3 All-American Frank Csorba - who ran 13:56 in March - dead
RENATO can you talk about the preparation of Emile Cairess 2:06
