I'm a high school junior focusing on the 3200m run. MY current PR is 10:19. I have an invitational coming up in several days, and I really want to run 10:00 - 10:10. I'm aiming to hit 1600m at around 5:00.
Is it better to start out quick and try to maintain a pace, or to start conservatively and start picking it up at the 1600m mark?
I'm trying to decide wether I should:
a) start out with consistent ~75 second 400 splits until the 1600 mark, or
b) start out with faster guys and maintain their pace, hoping they hit 1600 at 5:00
I think that option b sounds a little more feasible... I fear that if I start out with my first lap slower than usual it could set a precedent for the rest of the race, ultimately delivering a slower time than desired. I also don't really want to overanalyze the race and become dependent on other runners in case they run differently than I am expecting, which would also impact the race.
What do you think? All advice is welcome.
