Hey All!
I am a female college distance runner and have been pretty successful (All-American in cross, 17:10 5k etc.) up until this track season when INJURY STRUCK.
During cross season, my hip started feeling a little sore/tight..I ignored it and ran nationals, and it wasn't too bad. I took a week off from running, then tried again--it still hurt, but worse. I started to have a constant dull ache in my hip (even while sleeping) which would become sharper as I exercised. It got to the point where I couldn't walk up stairs without rather intense pain. I got an MRI and found out I hadn't torn my labrum, which was wonderful...but still, the pain persists.
The trainer told me to do cross-training, so I worked super hard in the pool/elliptical etc. (at least an hour a day). When it didn't start feeling better, I started PT 3 times a week, still continuing intense cross training, no running etc. I had a little improvement, but not much.
I have continued this regimen for 5 months now, and I am so tired of being in pain and not being able to do what I love! I have had to miss my entire track season and have been devastated pretty much the whole time. I really just want running back and will do whatever it takes!
My question is: should I just rest completely? That is pretty much the only thing I haven't tried (other than cortisone shots) and as much as it pains me to rest, I don't know if I should...is complete rest necessary?/beneficial?
