I dislike being the kind of person that hates on hobby joggers; I know I am one myself, but I guess this is aimed more towards the, I don't know, "slow hobby joggers" or whatever.
My supervisor at work likes a lot to talk about the one marathon he did. On finding out that I run too, he asks if he can join me. He doesn't look too fast, so I laid down the pace and distance I'm going to run. 13 miles at 7 min/mile. He looks a little confused by the min/mile notation, converts it into miles per hour ("treadmill pace") and decides that it'll be no problem for him.
So the next morning we meet to run. I start off at what must have been 7:15. After 100 meters, he's lagging behind, slow down to 8:00 by 400m, he's still huffing and puffing, eventually the first mile is done in like 9:30 or something. And then he slows down more. Worse-- he keeps stopping. Randomly. Just keeps stopping. It was so weird. So we're going at 10:30 or 11:00 pace PLUS random stops. I decided to be nice and go along with him, though.
I shouldn't have. He starts criticizing my form. Also, the shoes I wear are wrong. I need more cushion. My arm movement needs refinement. And then, he goes on to tell me how I should be training. And he went on and on about something or the other.. to be honest, I tuned out. I tried being patient with him in the beginning, but couldn't. After six miles, I just left him.
The guy knows I can run a 35-36 min 10k while he can probably maybe just creep under an hour. Why on earth would a complete beginner think that someone who is almost twice as quick as him need to hear his "advice"?
To be honest, I don't know why it bothers me so much. But it does.
