There was a runner sometime between 1986-1992, who was pretty fast on distances between 1500-5000 m.
She actually won an Olympic medal, if I remember well.
She said that she was not drinking water right away after finishing her runs, because her body would learn that it will receive water whenever she does some effort.
From this I would understand that she was drinking water only 1-2 hours later at least.
The purpose would've been to let her body to cool down with less water.
I don't know if it worked or not and I don't know studies on this matter.
