I'm sorry but isn't it a newscaster's job to be informed? I don't know how you can take yourself seriously as a newscaster when you show up to broadcast an event TOTALLY UNPREPARED. I mean at least look up the goddamn world records in the event and know what a respectable time is for a professional athlete. Jesus Christ. Do you think they would show up for election coverage having no idea who the candidates are, what issues matter or how they even get elected?! If I'm going on TV I'm certainly not going to make an utter fool of myself like these bimbos did. 0/10.

I watched the Las Vegas marathon one year and it was shown by the local tv station. It was so bad it was funny. The lady that did most of the talking today is the 11 pm news anchor. She's kind of ditzy about everything so there was no chance she knew anything about competitive running.

No, their job is to look good, read off of a teleprompter, and get more people watching them than watch channel 4 or 6. Running only gets on tv news 2 other times during the year in Columbus Ohio which is the Komen "race" and the marathon where they usually don't even tell who the winners were or their times.
If Christo wanted a little more tv coverage, he should have carried a football the whole race!
I love watching these races
1 Tara Welling F7 26 F 1:10:25 +0:00
2 Desiree Linden F1 32 F 1:11:06 +0:41
3 Brianne Nelson F2 35 F 1:11:24 +0:59
4 Lindsay Flanagan F5 25 F 1:12:16 +1:51
5 Janet Bawcom F3 37 F 1:13:49 +3:24
6 Lauren Jimison F4 25 F 1:13:53 +3:28
7 Semehar Tesfaye F21 25 F 1:14:12 +3:47
8 Kelsey Bruce F10 23 F 1:14:15 +3:50
9 Esther Atkins F9 30 F 1:14:19 +3:54
10 Kathleen Dicamillo F6 29 F 1:14:27 +4:02
Great race for Tara Welling. The women's 10,000 trials promises to be exciting!
Salty Running had good coverage of the women's race. Too late now though. But good to know for next time.
I'm starting to feel bad for Desi. I don't think she's ever won a marathon; has she ever won any race?
My boy Scott Fauble killin it.
You are right. She is kind of the world's fastest bridesmaid.

reading this thread is pretty hilarious. i watched the live, local broadcast and chuckled the entire time. i hoped, for true racing fans, usatf coverage would show a different, more race centered broadcast - doesn't sound like it. i understand the local channel's position in presenting the "race" from this angle. Capcity has grown to a solid spring community event (in columbus everyone knows someone running), the local channel wants to draw eyes on a saturday morning and highlight the event. it's not cheap to broadcast a roadrace so the poorly timed commercials were expected. in the end its too bad for the DOZENS of elite racing fans trying to follow along.
It's unfortunate usatf is too cheap to bring their own broadcast for the race, but instead tried piggyback on the local coverage and crowbar 5 minutes of elite racing (including 1 minute of women's coverage).
echoing another comment, i felt bad for josh cox - he did his best answering silly questions from two uninformed announcers.
for next year, constructively - they should split screen the local coverage with the elite races. 10tv gets a chance to draw in eyes and pay bills, usatf gets more respectable coverage of one of their nat'l champ races.
Watched the London Marathon on Eurosport, that was pretty pathetic too, and the commentators were two ex marathon runners (Liz Yelling, who spoke like my four year old, and some bloke whose name escapes me). No worthwhile splits and it took until half way before they realized there was the possibility of a world record, so zero build up and excitement to then and not much after either. So it's not just the non-runners.
They should just pay to fly Carrie Tollefson to all these races.
This was probably better than the 12k championship last fall that I watched in person. I had run the Richmond marathon the day before so I was close by. At that race, you could see the start and finish and that is all since it was an out and back course. USATF makes it really hard to be a spectator.

If anyone has a results link that would be appreciated.
Laugh a minute here all bitching about announcers no results.

Lol. I think Josh did as good a job as anyone could do under the circumstances. He gave a good answer to the question "For the Marathoners, is it easier to run a half marathon?" Josh answered something like there are different zones and both are hard but in a way that "layman" could understand.
Even a semi-competent news department could have done a better job. Put the human interest stories early on and after the elites finish. Have a camera on the lead women. Flash the leaderboard. Less time spent going to reporters watching the race with crowds. Maybe a short profile or three about some of the elites to mix in with the fat guy who is a "dancecam" star at Bluejackets hockey games.
Tara (Erdmann) Welling. A wonderful story of persistence and belief in herself. Buried in the incompetence of the coverage of this event.

Has overcome the disaster of NOP
Tara is great but she sounds exactly like Jordan when she talks, even resembles her. Is this a local CA dialect, like the "Valley Girl" thing?

Love Tara - keep rollin' girl!
