I've recently really gotten into running and was hoping if any of the fine experienced runners on this forum could give me some specific tips or a general guide, plan, set of routines or framework to focus on when practicing so I could improve my mile time or my endurance/speed. I only ask because today was my third day of practice and I've realized I'm quite clueless about running in that my practice has no structure, rhyme, or planning and is all over the place.
I was wondering if I should also focus more on speed training or endurance and what routines would the one I should focus on include? Right now I can run 100 m in a snail paced 17 seconds and the 400 m in about 1:15 - 1:20 D;. My endurance is pretty shabby too, I can complete a 5k but I think I'd find myself going at 9:00 mile pace or a bit above.
Last time I ran a mile was in Grade 11 and I ran it in 6:36. I didn't run then except only in PE when it was required. 6 years later of no running at all and having gotten into it, I can run the mile now in about 7 flat or maybe very high 6's if I push it.
I apologize in advance if there have been numerous questions like this before, but I just can't seem to be finding a good guide to my practice lately and so I thought it was best to directly ask the skilled folk on here.
Having said all this, should I consider myself naive to be aiming to run sub 5 mile one day or possibly even getting to 4:30 or pulling of an 18:00 or sub 18:00 5k?. I'd like to think I'm aware just how grueling and difficult these times are and that if there is a path to such times through practice it won't be puppies and sunshine and rainbows but I'm highly motivated to put in the practice and run the mpw required to reach them eventually.
Thanks to anyone who takes the time to read/answer my poorly worded question :D
