My high school teammates are regressing spectacularly in college, what's up?

There's a high jumper who went from 6'3 his senior year to 5'7 as his pr so far.

A 1:15 half-marathon runner running 17:20 for the 5k on the track.

52-second 400 guys are running 54s and 55s..

A 2:00 800 guy can't break 2:06

A 4:39 miler is running 4:35 1500s now.

No injuries to speak of.

I plateaued for a year, like my Senior and Freshman times were identical. What's the problem they all seem to be having? At what point do you say "I'm spreading myself to thin and track isn't working out" ? They're all D3 so it doesn't really matter.

Maybe now they are actually having to pay attention to their class work?

Bad coaching?

They have gfs?

They realize that in the reality a 1720 5k is worth the same as a 1450?

Partying too much. Bad diets. Not sleeping. Harder training.

All the typical stuff, this is not unusual.

Lots of people regress in college even without all those distractions. You simply CANNOT expect to always improve in a nice linear fashion.

They got to D3 or D2 or wherever and found out that everyone was as fast as they were. And they didn't want to work work harder to stand out in high school, because college.

Success is showing up. I did the above, and a complete hack when I was a freshman who stayed with it wound up being pretty decent.

Freshman year there are tons of distractions and for the first time in your life you are in total control of your destiny.. Most kids loose focus and feel the pull to party , little sleep and skip training .. It takes alot of discipline ..and most lack the maturity to understand the results of their actions.. I fell victim to this as well.. I was a fairly decent HS runner went to a small NAIA program but quickly became more involved in the social side of college and ended up quitting the team.. There isnt a day that goes by I regret that decision..My team mates went on to Nationals multiple times had great experiences traveling and competing .. I will always wonder what I could have done if I stayed focused..
