wut? if i run a mile averaging sub 4 pace, i've run a sub 4 mile.
shortest distance above one mile.
Simplifying this to a 4 minute 1600 pace, consider for example a 5 minute 2000 paced as:
100m: 10s
1800m: 4:40
100m: 10s
With the 1800m segment run evenly at a pace of 280s x 1500/1800 = 3:53.333 per 1500. Nowhere within that 1800m segment is a sub-4 1600 run; and in the entire 2000m the fastest 1600m segment is 4:03.333.
The specifics are in another thread somewhere, but iirc the distance has to be double the segment length before this becomes impossible, and it may become possible again for longer distances like 5000. I forget exactly and don't care to look it up.
