They're shoes!
I have a pair of 17s which are about six months old which I like for long runs. As they're wearing out a little, I tried a pair of 18s in a store. They definitely aren't quite as cushioned, if that's what you're looking for. I ordered a pair of 17s on closeout for $99.

IMO, the GEL cushioning last a long time. Longer than only EVA shoes. Nimbus' keep going.
Would you say they are a good shoe for an advanced runner (50+ mpw, fast times, good daily trainer, etc...)
Nimbus are good shoes, however the gel cushion is just a marketing ploy, the cushion really just comes from super soft foam.

I personally prefer a shoe with a firmer feel @op, but nimbus is a good shoe.
Pretty good shoe, very stable and provides a bit of cushioning if that's what you are into. As far as trainers go they are somewhat heavy, but you definitely get used to them. The Cumulus are a pretty similar shoe just a tad cheaper.
Yeah, I have the 17s as well - LOVE them. I desperately tried to get another pair the last few weeks after I tried on the 18s on in the store but can't seem to find any in SA. The 18s doesn't feel as cushioned which is what I want with the Comrades (89km) coming up. I have now done just over 20 kms in the 18s and they seem to be settling in nicely and getting a bit softer, but if I can find a pair of 17s in the next week or so I will definitely jump at getting them.
The Asics GEL-Nimbus 18 is a premium cushioned shoe targeting serious runners looking for a durable daily trainer with a stable ride. It's the most recent in the successful GEL-Nimbus line. see the full review here http://www.runnerschoice.net/reviews/asics-gel-nimbus-running-shoe
