did anybody see wetmore yelling at the dibabas during their 5k?
i mean he's the meet director and he's yelling at them every lap around because he wants a world recor so badly. i don't think he's their agent or anything so i'm assuming he's just sleazy.
Yea i saw wetmore yelling at them..young guy by the way...but it was for encouragement and dont think he just wanted to the record, im sure the runners wanted to know how the were doin to

I was not there, but I know Mark Wetmore well enough to tell you that he wants what is best for the athletes. Any yelling that he did was because he cares.
Agree, no one could mistake Whetmore's enthusiasm on the infield for anything other than passion for performance.
I do agree, however, that the soon to be lapped runners could have been asked to the 2nd lane even though I don't think it's mandatory.
Just like to thank Whetmore and all involved for a great meet. 2 1/2 hours of excitement and thrilling records and near misses. When else could we ever see Bekele and the other Ethiopians perform?..MOst of the time we just marvel at their performances second hand.
It's Defar's fault for running too fast. She's the one who was gonna pass the other runners.....
9:00 runners are not "fat-asses", but the meet could reasonably ask that lapped runners in the fast heat to step off the track (going to lane 2 is asking for a collision).
Mark Wetmore is Tirunesh Dibaba's agent. I assume he would be happy that one of his own athletes broke a WR at his own meet.

Is this supposed to be a race or just a pure WR attempt for Defar? If this was the latter, then why not just have an electronic rabbit and just her running around in circles, that way no one would get in her way. If this was intended to be a race, then the lapped runner doesn't have to get out of anyone's way, and there shouldn't be a rabbit at all, and records should be broken because you raced your competitors and the time was a by-product.
Whatever happened to tough runners? It seems everyone bitches and complains if the temperature is a couple degrees off or the rabbit runs 2-3 secs off. Then, the runner has the nerve to blame the rabbit as though they had no mind of their own to realize they were off pace and to pick up the pace themselves.
Sorry for the vent, this kind of crap you never got back in the 70s and 60s.

i live in NJ.. I had a smokin hot ethiopian chick.. none of the runners are that hot.. but the chicks are hot as hell.
I watched Wetmore yelling too. So was I. So was the whole place. Agent or meet director he is still in his heart a fan of running. I know him and I've run good, hard workouts with him back in the '80s. He loves the sport and that's why he took the risk to go into the new business of agent/director instead of other things guys with law degrees do.

Bull shit. What if an 8:30 girl was put in a race with 10:30 girls? Should the faster girl hold back the whole way so that she can create a race and stay in contention with the others? It's not Defar's fault she was in a completely different league to the others last night. Whatever happened to pushing yourself to the limits, seeing how fast you can personally run instead of waiting for some less-abled to try and push you to it.
Can't wait for the Dibaba vs Defar race in Birmingham!!

I've always been a Defar fan myself. But Dibaba does her thang too.
Only these types of statements can be coming from a consistently lapped runner.

When you are lapping a runner, they have ceased to become a "competitor" with you. They are nothing more than an obstacle.
Are you forgetting that some of these runners make a living by running these races??? A MEET OFFICIAL should have been clearing lane one on the last two laps of that race.
Do you think going for the World Record was decided mid-race? This was a planned attempt. This was most likely a 25K dollar pay day that she was hoping for and counting on. I was sitting on the back turn where she go tripped up a second time by lapped runners (who were trying to pass each other) with 75 meters to go. Those two lapped runners cost her at least the .9 or whatever it was that she needed for that World Record.
I agree with the rabbit comment, but this was not the case. The second half of that race was a solo effort and Defar was robbed. She raced her "competitors" and ran them into the ground. Then she had to deal with the obstacles--which should not be a part of running.
Oh, and I seem to remember that decades ago that lapped runners used to have to step off the track and end their race. Whatever happened to that?
I think dealing with lapped runners is all part of setting WR's for 3k and 5k indoors. Yeah it sucks, but you have to remember that most prior indoor WR's had to deal with the same thing. I remember this topic being brought up with Komen and HaileG swapping the 5k indoor WR's, HaileG got it but had to deal with more lapped runners on his last lap.
Honestly, the whole removing people from the race because they are getting lapped rarely ever happened post 1970s. And the people getting lapped (30sec or so behind) are still running decent times. Imagine you were a collegiate runner in that race and flew out to run on Boston to get a NCAA time in and then 200m from the finish some meet official asks you to step off even though you are running 9:05 or something?!?
Yeah it sucks that she missed the WR marginally, but to me lapping runners is part of indoors racing. Deal with it. She should have gone out in lane 2 instead of yelling and waiting.
