Suggestions for dog to jog with; (No poodles or lap dogs need apply)

A Labrador? well if you yourself are very boring and middle of the road a lab will do ;)

Why not go for a Groenedaeler, or a Scottish Collie.

Labs are moderately good runners, but not the best. If you only want to go on lighter runs, they are pretty good. Particularly the lighter, more athletically built labs. Lots of labs are pretty big now.

I recommend an Australian Shepherd. Of course, I'm totally biased as I have one. She can handle the harshest winters (she actually prefers winter over summer, and running in single digit temps is not a bother at all), and she's good with short and fast or long and steady. Aussies are awesome dogs.

Of course, there are also lots of good mixes available at shelters and other places. Pointers, shepherds, and other ground covering breeds are pretty easy to come by.

Word of warning: that's a very high energy dog. That means you need to exercise the dog A LOT.

Get a mutt/mix and get a rescue. There are plenty around.

I rescued a German shepherd mix in January. He is about 9 months old I think and I am gradually turning him into a running dog. Lots of energy and always wants to run. Great temperament with my two boys aged 9 & 6. Maybe I just got lucky. Best we did so far is a 9 minute mile on trails. Looking at pics I think he may be a mix with Rottweiler.

The Op is asking a message board for dog advice and thinks dog breeds are to blame for being untrained. So you can safely assume he knows nothing, and thus any herding or pointing dog will be a disaster for him. Not a knock on the breeds, but a 60 year old first time dog owner isn't going to handle a big running dog.

Get a lab, teach it to heel, and be happy.

Dogs don't jog. They don't do this in nature; what makes you think they'd want to do this now?!

I'd be pretty upset if I was a dog selected from a kennel only to find out that a guy wanted to take me running everyday. I'd be so pissed.

I have a poodle / Aussie shepherd mix [Aussie Doodle]. Great dog. Loves to run. Doesn't shed. Highly intelligent. Not as high energy as a pure bred Aussie.

Just about any dog can outrun just about any human. Not a little mutant thing like a pug or dachshund maybe, but any normal dog from medium size on up can stay with you. They'll want to sprint off and chase squirrels and go drink in the creek and stuff and run 10x as much as you do, but they'll figure it out as they get used to accompanying you on your run.

Not all Aussies are high energy. Ours is actually quite mellow. I would say most I have met are in the middle.

I actually see more Labs that are bouncing off the wall with high energy.

go with the dachshund and you can't go wrong....the little wiener dog isn't much of a runner but it will make you look exactly like the 'crazy old man' that you have become.....
