20 x 400 ain't nothing for high schoolers, Jim Ryun did 50 x 400 quite regularly followed by 16 x 800 the next day.

There’s an idiot coach at our school that has us do 30x400.
really depends on the training
my HS we did this workout twice a season or so
done at 2 mile pace with I wanna say 1:30 rest
last 5 or so usually got picked up a lot and hurt

Another idiot coach? wrote:
My daughter is a freshman in high school and just showed me her schedule for this week. It calls for 20X400 on Thursday. 5 miles of quality when they haven't done more than 2 at this point.
Her teammates say the coach doesn't tell them how fast to run them. They run it as a 2 person relay so the recovery is standing rest for as long as it takes her partner to finish. Probably 1:30 to 2:00. I told her to run them around 10k pace to try to limit the damage and don't listen if he tells her to run harder. Everyone else will be going all out.
Is her coach just an idiot or has anyone heard of something like this for high school training?
Pretty standard workout. And it isn't even very hard as long as you keep the pace in 3200-5k range.
Standard for who Zatopek junior?
It's a crock
I was getting back into shape and wanted to run 16:30. One of my workouts was 20x400 @ 79 with 60 seconds rest. It was a great workout. Didn’t feel hard. I got a ton of volume in at race pace, and I picked it up the last 5.
I repeat: this was an easier workout. If I did them at 72 it would have hurt. But I didn’t.
Btw I went sub 16:30 pretty easily.
I can totally see HS kids doing this if the pace is @ 5k. Especially with this extra rest he is giving them.
Let the dude coach his athletes, weirdo.
40x400m sub 70 with 90 seconds standing rest Jr year. It can be done. Just do it. Senior year never did more than 20 at a time.
