I feel quite certain that if you picked 25 people off the street, even limiting it to 30 years old or younger, and especially if some ladies were mixed in, Bekele would beat them 1 against 25 over 10,000 meters.

absolutely. even though we might consider it slow, the average dude cant run 63-64 for 400m. KB would probably drop the 25 scrubs in a lap or two. Still, it will be funny to watch that fat wrestler try to race some guys from the ethiopian national team - regardless of the handicap.

Well, one of the women on the show (Hayden) supposedly went to the University of New Mexico on a track scholarship, so maybe her performance will be somewhat more respectable than the others'.

So a quality woman can run about 2:08 for 800m roughly? From memory, the ethiopians started to throw in 61/62s laps in the middle of the 10k just to test the others out, KB would have no problem.

The womens WR for mile is about 4:10? Even if you got some international women to race KB they would have a tough time.

Anyone identify those Ethiopian runners from the show? A couple of them looked familiar but I am terrible with names. Wasn't that their real coach too? Dr. something... I hate that they just put Leg 1 Runner or whatever for their names.

It was kind of unclear to me at first. But the gist of it was that the teams of two Amazing Racers had to select from what the announcer said was the Ethiopian national running team and then run a four person relay race (against any other team present). When they finished they were handed their next clue from the national team coach.

But all they seemed to have to do is make one lap of the track. It was like a 4X400m race - only there was no real race to speak of, at least not the way they presented it. They just had to run and I guess if they ended up beating the other ARers, then they had that bit of time advantage. Only all the ARers started whenever they got to the stadium - which varied greatly.

They didn't announce who any of the Ethiopian runners were nor their credentials and there was no clock on anybody. There was some entertainment value in watching how slow some the ARers were (especially Kentra who seemed to bonk at 150 metres into the race, dying on her feet). Hayden seemed okay. She was the former track athlete who ran for Arizona, if I remember correctly. She actually said on camera that she had a lot of experience with the 4X400 event.

at least of the taller darker runners are part of the Jinka project. I know 1 of them. Jinka is close to the sudanese border and someone convinced the federation to look for Sprinters there.

None of the athletes you saw were 'elite' they are club runners that compete at most at the regional level.

The singlets were provided last summer as part of the junior east african championships.

I was more impressed with the dudes that were running up the steps.. on the field of dreams.. the stairs infront of the biggest square in town (meskel Square) high knee running, in tattered shoes..on solid pavement..

I doubt the talk about minimlist shoes gele mele..(etc)

One reson, this was filmed in Sept. RIght after the Olympics i noticed the yellow flowers in the fileds that only blossom in the month of Sept.
