Studied liberal arts in college and have a job that has nothing to do with my major. Anyone else in this boat?

If you didn't complete your degree, you wouldn't have your job today.

Getting a college degree, in anything, shows you set a goal and accomplished it.

It you gives you an advantage for employment over others that did not get their degree or didn't even try to go to college.

I was a little bewildered when I wasn't taught the basic computer program used in my industry at the time but now, 15 years later, we laugh at the thought of using that program. You go to college to learn broader ideas and process not to pick up technical skills for an entry level job.

Yes, I was a history major at a liberal arts school. I am now a CTO at a fortune 500 company.

I have a math degree and don't use any of what I learned and couldn't do my old homework now.

The undergraduate years are supposed to make you intro a well-rounded interesting character. Graduate school is for professional training. Obviously people hoping to go to medical school should take organic chemistry and such, but, you know, undergraduates should read poems and not because they intended to become poets.

Liberal Arts has nothing to do with the real world. Didn't they tell you that?

I am. Art History major and I work at a very large investment manager as an analyst on the multi asset desk.

The caveat is it took me 3 years post graduation to get the job and I had to work really hard. Must be nice to be given a job from a friend's dad.

Obviously the OP F'ed up. Everybody knows all degrees are worthless unless they come from Harvard.

About 50% of grads do not have a job related to their degree within a year of graduation. However, a degree is definitely a lot more worthy than a high school diploma and can open more opportunities, if the person is willing to work and chase them.

I reflect on my studies constantly. I am very lucky to have had the luxury to study liberal arts. It is invaluable, but increasingly a pursuit of the wealthy.
