Cram, coe or ovett? Some big race and he knew he had it. Pumped his fist before he even moved into the lead. He won the race. I'm not talking about the Ovett vs. Treacy race where Treacy won.

Maybe Eamonn Coghlan in the WC 5000?
Didn't Coghlan pump his fist as he passed the Soviet (for the win) in the 1983 WC 5000?
Ovett, clearly. He loved to celebrate his victories early...and it occasionally cost him (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QVxxaj1j9nE).
Coghlan. WC 5000 '83 when he passed Dmitri Dmitriev.
In neither Ovett nor Coghlan's case do I believe they pumped their first on those occasions. They were adept with the ladies.
Talking about this?

He looked confident but I didn't see a fist pump.
At 13:07 you see him clench both fists and then he drops them just as the camera zooms in.
There were close up pictures at the time and he was already celebrating as if he's won.
Yes. You can see it better with that clearer video.
Not a fist pump but a confident fist clench 13:07 into the race.
Actually, it was a double!

Great find. You can also see the fist pump clearly here:
https://youtu.be/uIy0Jpm9moE?t=8m55sOvett was arrogant no two ways about that but he was a showman to be fair . Has a personality unlike Treacy who is very dry zzz
I know who I'd like a beer with ...
What annoyed me more was the typical Brit commentary and arrogance about how easy it was for ovett etc
Ovett, 77 World Cup 1500m was a good un.

180 or so to go: "There's one man's blazing speed that has torn this field asunder."
80 or so to go: "The wave is there, the confidence is there."
Here's the video of Ovett over celebrating in a race with Rono. I'd say Ovett did it more than Eamonn but "the look" from Coghlan deserved a sharply placed elbow.
It seems to have been Ovett's signature. He does it in the 1977 and 1978 World Cup 1500m's, and he does it in that 1980 "tie" of Coe's WR (3:32.1). He probably did it numerous other occasions as well.
The 1978:
Here Ovett does it in outkicking Henry Rono in 1978 (Rono's great year) in a world record 2M!
Rono had thrown in a 61 before the last lap to drop Ovett. It did not work at all and Ovett went past him very quickly at the end.

Here Ovett does it in the 1986 Commonwealth Games 5000m:
All these led me to the 1983 World Championship in the 1500m, won decisively by Cram (roughly 39 final 300m), Scott 2nd, Aouita third. That Aouita was leading with 400m to go and dropped by Cram was surely responsible for Aouita's not running the 1500m at the Olympics the following year. No, he was not in shape to close 3:34.8 with a 36.1, as he supposedly did at Grossetto in 1984. That did not happen, I am sure of it.

Did you look again?
