Viewership was up five percent from 2012.

That is a pretty good number I think.
I was out of town that weekend, and went to a sports bar and had them put it on one of the bigger screens. Surprisingly, a few other people payed attention to it for most of the race!
1 million of that 1.2M was dirty old guys recording HD of Sara Babe.
Any idea how much NBC would have paid for the rights to this broadcast? Seems like the USATF made some decent money.

NBC didn't pay. USATF bought the 2 hours and then sell the commercials in that 2 hour block. USATF makes money on both ends.
You too can buy a 2 hour Saturday block of time from NBC and run a live event in it.
NBC paid $7.75 Billion for Olympic broadcast rights through 2032.

Which has nothing to do with US Olympic Trials.
All the runners chipped in with their kidneys.
Yet you will never hear anything from the USATF haters and the whiney sub elites about this. Because it doesn't fit the narrative that there was more exposure to the race.
It has nothing to do with the US Olympic Trials except for the fact that the US Olympic Trials can't be broadcast, streamed, or taped on non-NBC platforms.

Nice of you to chime in Stephanie.
You mean ALL that money they make as national elite? Oh, that's right.. They make less than a barista being national elite.
'Whiney sub elites'
So true, but you really have no idea how 'sub elite' they are.
There are roughly 200 regular (monthly) posters on this website.
Over 50% of them never race...
However, their criticism of USATF is valid, it is a witches brew of wannabes, never was, and committee cruds.

Hey Max!
The headline at RW says the number of viewers is unchanged.
She believes the majority of viewers did not know the trials were happening beforehand, and simply tuned in because it was on at the time.
Wow. Golf clap to USATF.
Pop pop guy is not a runner.
He doesn't race, he's a running poser.
If he's a runner, let's hear some credentials....
Pop pop guy's real name is Weldon Johnson.
There are more players in any major sporting league: NBA, NFL, NHL, MLB, MLS, PGA, etc. compared to those "sun elites" who toed the starting line.
Even those "sub elite" football players on the practice squad make a decent wage and get a Super Bowl ring.
This kind of elitism and degrading America's best is flat out rude. They ran a qualifying time that was faster than the Olympic Games standard. Let's start by changing the definition. If you can compete in the Olympics, you are elite.

It's similar to what the Trials got last time.
Track needs to be on Network TV.
Network >ESPN > ESPN2 > NBCSN in terms of viewership.
The World Champs can get 1.5 million viewers. Pre Classic 750,000 so the Olympic Marathon Trials 1.2 million is a good number but in line with what it was last time.
Here are some viewership numbers from 2012

I posted what was published at RW.

USATF loves my demographic.
Des Linden: "The entire sport" has changed since she first started running Boston.
Am I living in the twilight zone? The Boston Marathon weather was terrible!

Matt Choi was drinking beer halfway through the Boston Marathon
