I believe his point is that a nation is not strong in the marathon when a masters age runner, a neophyte, and a person who is totally unknown outside of a small core of hardcore fans make the Olympic team. This strikes me as a reasonable view.
Ward may not be a "household" name, but hardly an unknown at least in folks who follow marathoning.
Sounds like the best mix you could ask for.

The 40yo is the only one with a chance vs the Ethiopians and Eritreans in tropical Brazil. He is skinny and born in a hot country. The Kenyans have little chance either.
It will be much like Beijing, some unknown desert guy will run away with it and finish fresh as a spring daisy.

Well, actually I watched LA marathon last year, and before that hadn't heard much about Ward. But he ran an impressive, strong race in the heat. Two weeks ago, however, I didn't have him in the top 5 but with the heat on I put his stock up into the top 3. And yes, I recognized him.
