I have had some calf tightness on and off for a few months now. I have been going to an ART doc who has been helping a lot but still everyone once and awhile the calf will really get pretty tight (ever my heel / arch will hurt / feel tight as a result). I am wondering if it is possible that I have micro tears, and more specifically what the symptoms of this could be

Also micro tears are a function of hard exercise. It results in DOMs, which I suspect you have felt many times.
A larger tear feels like just that, a muscle tear.
You sound like you have neither. You sound like you are training hard and sometimes things get tight and tired. That is normal.
Try to keep track of what you did 1 or 2 days before it happened and see if there is a pattern and if a certain type of workout seems to hit your calves harder than they should.
Maybe it is running on the grass, maybe dirt, maybe you have poor form a faster speeds, dunno.
