Just take time off until the pain goes away. Most heal without complications. I usually rely on the "hop" test, if I don't feel any pain with that I figure I'm probably g2g as far as getting back into running.
At times I have come back too soon and had to take another two weeks or so off, even in that circumstance it's not really a big deal and it isn't a huge set back or anything. I usually feel that Dr's are a little too cautious with stress frx recovery. After my 5th I stopped seeing them, I don't need an mri/bone scan to prove what I already know.
I've had 7 total. After a while you really can recognize "bone pain" vs. other types of pain. If it is in your heel, it might be a bit slower to heal just because of poor blood flow to the area. I go by the "if it doesn't hurt, you're probably fine" mentality in regards to walking, xtraining, and eventually getting back into running.
