All else aside, what do you think is the ideal height for a runner? I'm prejudiced to say 5'11", but it seems like the spectrum isn't very narrow.

5'6. Seriously look at Mo, KB, Geb, Dennis Kimetto and the rest of the distance runners and you don't find a ton over 5'10. Now you can ask your self is that because Kenyans and Ethopians tend to be short or are there advantages (better mass to surface area for heat remove and power to strength ratios).
Mid distance guys tend to be another couple inches taller.
Cam is 6'6. He can run but he can't dive...
depends on the event
and the ratios.
I think most good runners are above 5', but below 6'6"
Tsegaye Kebede, one of the best marathoners of the current (or any) era is listed at 5'2", Usain Bolt at 6'5".
If you really want optimal, it is probably less than 5'11" though (think wind resistance).
at 5'6" id like to think its the ideal height for an endurance runner but my legs are not that long compared to my torso..
i think if you look a KB Mo and especially Haile these guys are around 5'6" but have very long legs for their height
avg for top 100 marathon men is about 5'7", 124 lbs.

I think you want a short torso and long legs. That would be opposite that of a good swimmer. Small calf muscles with stronger upper thighs.
