I am so bummed about this. I thought she had a chance to make the team and know that she would've been in the mix, keeping things interesting the entire race. Huge loss for the trials.

She does okay commentating. They should give her a commentating gig as long as she's not running

Actually, Deena, usatf, etc., broke it. Posting something here already reported and/or tweeted elsewhere doesn't mean you broke the story, eejit.

Another sad day for USATF Marketing/Social Media Department - they posted on Instagram a picture of Deena and called her an Olympic Silver medalist. Except she is not, she is a Bronze medalist. What medal you get in the Olympics is a big deal, you would think they would get that right at least.

Of the 34 people who commented so far none of them caught it or mentioned it. But why expect fans of the sport to know more about it than their governing body.

As the trials get close, it's not surprising that we are seeing contenders like Kastor, Vail, etc. trying to push their training a little too hard and going over the edge to injury.

Deena in the race certainly made things easier; however, I have not seen anything recently to suggest she had a legit shot at finishing top-3. Even in the twilight of her career, which was only a couple of years ago, she was still one of our top marathoners. And, I think she is still capable of being competitive, but only somewhere in the front row of the choir. I admire Deena for attempting to go out on her own terms. Btw, if USATF can get her to commentate, she will be very useful.

Depends on the perspective. Kara is a woman (mother) that many hobby joggers can resonate with and she is immensely popular with the RW crowd.

Basically those who bring the $ to the Marathons adore her.

Wish I could say the same about Deena.

Speaking as a woman and a "hobby jogger" (geez, that's a cheesy term), I love Deena. She is also a mother and a class act who has brought attention to breast cancer research all the while breaking Master's records. Kara has been about corporate networking in recent years, not performance, and if I had thousands of dollars in loose change hanging around wouldn't waste it on one of the women's running retreats she hosts. Kara is no more "deserving" than anyone else out there, and there is nothing "selfish" about being able to make the team, if you're able to make the team.

The weather on Saturday is going to be rough. GL to everyone competing.

This is an unbelievably stupid comment. This is SPORTS! What is the primary reason for holding a sporting event? Because you don't know what is going to happen. It's not scripted; it's not a popularity contest. If you want to have a cutest smile contest, fine--but this is marathoning, and to the swiftest three runners goes the Olympic berth.

Second point; why would someone finishing in the top three be stealing the medal chances from someone who finished fourth or worse? It doesn't make any kind of sense. (Setting aside the fact that none of them have much of a chance of medaling anyhow.)

3 athletes dropping a couple of days out is not unusual. Unfortunately, Deana, Vail and Abdi are all in the top tier.
