I was having a conversation the other day with an old friend I ran into when back in my home town. He was asking the usual stuff like what I've been up to and I mentioned that I recently spent a year travelling and working over in Europe.
When I asked if he'd ever been, he remarked that he's never been outside of the US and has absolutely no plans to. He has a pretty decent job and a good education but just no desire to ever leave these shores for some reason.
I find this crazy and when I mentioned it to my partner, she said that actually most Americans don't have a passport. I was pretty shocked by the this but it seems that just less than 1 in 2 (46%) US citizens do in fact own a passport.
I find this statistic incredible and wonder if we should be doing more to encourage Americans to go abroad and get some experience of how the rest of the world lives.
Anyone here never been outside of the US? If so, why not?
