The "celebrities" start it as a fashion statement and then the masses follow.
They don't realize how ridiculous they look and how others mock them for it. See also: high-waisted jeans and/or shorts. They don't good luck on any woman.

I remember when big sunglasses were fashionable in the late 70s and early 80s. I thought at the time that they were the most ridiculous looking think in the world and couldn't imagine them ever coming back into style once the fad passed. But the old bug eyes came back thirty plus years later and won't let go.
When they get to their late twenties, women often start wearing sunglasses more in order to cover bags and wrinkles. That's what I've noticed on social media. They also have pictures taken of them from farther distances. And there are more pictures of them with their back turned and looking out into the distance.

I'm a woman - this is the reason. You can cover a lot of wrinkles with bigger sunglasses.

One of my buddies observed a girl in those gigantic sunglasses and said, "I can't decide if that girl is really hot or if I think she's hot because her sunglasses are covering most of her face."
To protect them from the glare reflecting off of mens' cartoonishly large and balding heads.

We're confused because you can't hide the wrinkles. The bug look is not attractive.
Trust me, if you're awesomely fit we can care less about a few wrinkes around your eyes.
