I'm an endurance-based 800m type in track, so it's not like I'm a 4/8 guy who's at a huge physical disadvantage in cross. I'm still not as good at it as TF, of course, but I feel I shouldn't struggle with the mental aspect of it as much as I do. Waking up at 4:30am, standing around in the cold for three hours before racing, that horrible feeling of your muscles locking up halfway through a race, the mental grind of spreading your effort and energy over 5k...the sport just lacks the intensity and drive that track has. XC racing is my least favorite part of running by far, and high-mileage, low-speed training isn't much fun either. My team is getting better and last season I was low varsity level, so I'm excited to see what I can do next fall, but I don't want to spend the season with constant thoughts of quitting like I did last time.
