Thinking about a tahoe or an expedition.

Gas prices are volatile, so whether they are high or low at the moment is not a good reason to buy an SUV.
Why do you want an SUV? Can you afford it with $4/gallon gas?
Investment..... Naw.
V8 is excessive. I wouldnt think twice about sacrificing the power of a v6 to save a bit on gas and drive a 4-cylinder though... v6 in sedan/wagon/crossover always.
get a prius
Record lows? Says who Millennial Boy?
If you want one, get one.
Since you said investment I guess you are an Uber driver.
People may want to be driven around in a tall roomy vehicle.
The difference is about 4k a year in gas between $4/gal and $1.50/gal. Can you deal with that difference? So over 5 years, it could cost you an additional 20k.
A car is rarely if ever a good investment. (only if you are a collector and can buy a nice one and park it for 20+ years.)
Assuming you plan on actually driving it, heck yeah buy an suv if you want one and it suits your lifestyle.

But what if he actually HAS a penis? In that case he'll want a grown up means of transportation.
If you are worried about increasing gasoline prices you can buy a gasoline futures contract insuring you won't have to pay more for gasoline before 2020.
No car is an investment except maybe a classical car.
It's simply a mode of transportation. It loses value the moment you drive it off the dealer's lot.
I drive a V8 ford with my hair combed neat and I wear my war time coat in the wind and sleet.

No, it is not.
Downsizing and turbocharging with tiny 4 cylinder engines means your engine will last only about 150k miles.
Non turbo charged V8's are basically indestructible.
It's up to you, buy a small fuel efficient 4 cylinder car and replace it in another 3 years or built something that lasts.
Look at Europe, there tiny FIAT's and Opel Golfs are a JOKE.
The first question you should ask is whether you need a big SUV. Why would you buy anything bigger than you need, regardless of the price of gas? Second, if the answer to the first is yes, you need the big SUV, then can you afford either modest or sharp increases in the cost of driving that vehicle. Additionally, the bigger SUVs, because they cost more, will also cost you more to insure them.
