I grew up watching Dave at the X games and played his video games. I started followed him on social media when he started pursuing triathlon. His drive and passion towards the sport has been nothing short of inspirational to me. He seemed to really care for his family, friends and passions. If you look at his instagram posts and other sources, he seems like a great person.
I am absolutely shocked about his death and I know many, many people are as well. If you do any sort of research on the guy you'll find there's much to be admired. It just shows that you never know what's going on in someones head and how well it can be hidden...
I wouldn't be surprised if he suffered from CTE.

True. Those guys have suffered numerous concussions.

RIP...To one of the extreme sports pioneers does back flip on flat ramps then reinvents the wheel and pulls a front flip. World team Rally Driver, legit Ironman athlete...Range! Thank you Dave Mirra!
Sorry to hear this, but BMX does not qualify as cycling nor was Mirra a cyclist.
What makes me able to say that? A father that took his own life July 2, 2007, the day before my birthday. All you little tough guys that defend this type of behavior have no idea what you're talking about. Blinding by pain? Huh? If it's that bad, get help. If you've screwed up, get help. If you're in a rut, get help. It's pure selfishness, and not much more. I started my freshman year of college this year, and will be the first time that I'm not having to work year round since high school because of a grant and partial track scholarship. My mother tried her hardest to raise 3 kids after all that happened. She did her best. I became that kid at school that got made fun of for wearing old shoes and donated shoes. We were the family that actually needed welfare, and were on it up until my junior year of high school. It was embarrassing, and it sucked. We had ZERO money, and even less respect from those that looked down our noses at us struggling to get by. Like living in $hitty apartment complexes with drug dealers and prostitutes? Deal with it. Like being called "poor boy"? Deal with it. Like having to work 30 hours a week in high school? Deal with it. Like not being able to afford going to prom? Deal with it. Like having to either share a bed with your little brother or sleep on the floor of a 2 bedroom apartment in high school because your mom and sister shared the other bedroom? Deal with it. Like having no Christmas at all for years? Deal with it. So, unless any of you knobs have been through it personally, just because your video game hero offs himself and leaves behind a family, don't sit there and spout your junk. And yes, you bet I've got issues because of it- as does my two little sisters- as does my mom. After acting out, it all came to a head, and I have been with a state sponsored/volunteer psychologist since age 15. You don'tt ever "get over it". Rather, you learn to live with it. Work in progress. So, you wanted to know...there it is.
I know nothing about this guy - never even heard of him, but the bmx/skateboy culture is horrible - drugs etc
that;s about the only sport I wouldn't let my kid do.
surfing can be just as bad, in places.

Seems pretty legit to me.
"best cyclist of all time" ??! RIP to the man but i'm not sure that phrase applies.
Well, I should have held all that in. I do not know this man, other than what the rest of you know from pop culture and the internet. I feel bad for venting, but it was out of personal experience with this. I have no idea what he had experienced, what he had seen, done, or the type of situation he was in. It's not right for me to project my own thoughts/feelings on the situation without knowing the whole story; nor is it my business to judge another's actions. I hope that someone takes his wife and kids under their wings.
Its rough man, and I give you major props for making it through. People will never understand the meaning of having nothing at all, unless it happens to them and I agree there is help out there for this type of behavior.

GTFO. Why people like you post on threads like this? I will never understand.
Easy way out,
You say it's a work in progress. What you don't know is how it may end up just like Mirra.
He's about 10 years older then me, but we're from the same town. He was always active in the community. Great guy. He'll be missed.

Well, hopefully he won't first create a bunch of kids. Choosing to leave your minor children to fend for themselves or be cared for by others is disgustingly selfish behavior. Pull yourself together and fake it if you've brought dependents into the world and are depressed or whatever. Your job is to take care of them, not your feelings.

There you go.
The classic case of "Seems like he had it all." Heatbreaking to see the children.
Easy Way Out,
Rough story.....Sorry for your loss, for real.
Understand that your dad didn't take the action he did with clear thought in mind. I'm sure your therapists told you that you are not to blame. Your dad would have gone where he did regardless of how many kids he had.....and most importantly, WHO his kids were. You are not to blame.
If he passed from cancer, you would most likely feel different. People do not choose to get cancer, just as people don't choose to have mental illness.
Peace to you......

You are a closed minded dolt....
The "biker/skater" community is way more encouraging to children than mainstream sports like baseball and football, etc.
I can read your kids mind and he's thinking " My dad is a f-tard. Now where's my skateboard?"
